It's open levels. You don't get a whole world to explore, but the levels are, for the most part, more than just corridors you follow. You sometimes have the option of tackling objectives in a certain order. You can retrace your steps. Sometimes you'll find that you NEED to retrace your steps to use a power up and a new location.
You never really feel confined except in a few areas in which you're supposed to feel confined.
