Weapon recommendation?
Just started playing, and been using the starting weapon til now. Upgraded the starting weapon, so can't compare it with other weapons in a like-for-like fashion. Which weapons should I go for? Found some red chainsaw looking thing, 1handed that seems rather similar to the starting thing, except better proficiency skaling.

From Dark souls I've tended to prefer 1hsword and shield, and mostly use range and dodging as defense rather than blocking. Especially in this game (for the few hours I've played) I've not been blocking much but rather been using range, movement and dodging. Is the chainsaw looking weapon good for that? If not, which others should I be on the lookout for?

In this game there's no "shield" as you know it in dark souls. In the surge you can block normal attacks with any weapon with 100% effectiveness (though stamina consumption may differ per weapon). There are unblockable attacks.

Why did you like the 1h sword in Dark Souls?

If you like to dodge a lot I can recommend fast weapons (so you don't get stuck too often in your swing animation) like Twin-Rigged or One-Handed. Another fast option is the Staff, but you should play around with it a bit to see if you like it.

In terms of weapons type:
One-Handed: the starting piston is one, but its moveset is basic. The red chainsaw has the full moveset of the one-handed weapons, which allows you to do a slam and spin attacks (try out combinations of VVHH, HVVV etc). This weapon is great for the first few areas. In Central Production B you can get a fire one-handed sword if you like the look of it.

Twin-Rigged: fast but low impact, relies on many hits, combos or hit and run. You can get your first one in the Power Plant (Abandoned Production, 1st area). You cannot miss the guy because he's guarding a key objective. You can also get a fire version in Central Production B (Strigil). If you can increase your Impact stat, these things can become mean.

Staff: Lots of range, but not really my style. Can do many small hits but also big hits depending on the buttons/combo. Try to find one in the area where you first encounter the poison on the floor (in the first area). Again, a fire staff is available in Central Production B.

In terms of which weapon to use:
There are many different factors why you would pick a weapon over another.
- Looks: obviously the most important. Looking cool and feeling good is nice in a single player game.
- Proficiency scaling. I don't have the exact formula, but it doesn't matter _as_ much as in Dark Souls. Weapons with higher proficiency scaling usually have lower base damage so it will be a while before they outdamage high base damage weapons. You should be able to check the damage stat any time in your inventory. Early on in the game when you proficiency is still low (<10?) low-medium proficiency weapons will usually still outdamage high proficiency weapons.
- Damage type. Also unclear what exactly it does, but every weapon has different damage types (look at the Detailed Page in your inventory). If you look at the detailed page of armors you can see resistances against these same damage types. From what I've noticed, elemental damage is very effective against robots.

Weapons are categorized by type and the more you use a certain type the higher your proficiency becomes in that weapon for type.

That being said I'd recommend playing around with all the different weapon types you find to see what you like for your play style.

I too prefer to dodge rather than block. I have primarily been focusing on twin rigged (mentioned above, very fast) and staffs which have medium attack attack speed and impact and good range.

Single handed are more middle of the road. Single rigged and super heavy weapons are much slower but harder hitting. More along the lines of an ultra great sword in dark souls.

The vibro blade that you found isn't half bad.
The pax is a very nice single rigged weapon that you get off the first boss.
MG Negotiator is a good early staff that you can get near the beginning of the second area (central production).
Fire Throttle is a twin rigged that the second boss drops that is good.

Those are the main weapons that I used through the first half of the Game. I wouldn't worry too much about focusing on one weapon proficiency unless you find a weapon type that you really like.

In the tunnel area in the first level there's an area with poison gas and some drones: there's a great weapon at the end of that called Volatile Spectre (single rigged) and I think it's the best weapon in the starting level. Definitely worth a suicide run.

You can level all your weapons with a little bit of grinding, so try them all and practice their movesets and combos. All the weapons have combo moves, try hitting HHV, VVH etc (v=vertical, h=horizontal) and se what weapons suit you.

If you mean DS3 then the Lothric Knight Sword would be my reason. S scaling in everything but strength where it gets an A if I remember correctly. Arguably the best weapon in the game. 1h allows you to parry and block. On a dex build the 2h damage increase is small so 1h is usually better.

I like 1h swords in DS too. Especially Lothric SS and Balder Side Sword. But staff weapons really rule in The Surge. Check them out.

The Surge requires dodges instead of blocks.

Other people cover 1 handed weapon types well.
Once I found a heavy 2 hander I never looked back. I smashed my way through the whole game with increasingly powerful huge weapons and it was super fun. It was harder to block and dodge because of the long animations but when you hit something you hit like a truck.

About recommendation . . .

I recommend you test it all and use whatever you feel confortable with, THAT will be the best weapon for you. ;)

That is me.
Dark Souls 3 my fav weapon (and the only I can finish the game properly) is the Dragonslayer Greataxe (before that, the Greataxe).
It really hit like a truck against everything (less these giant walking-hand monsters at prophaned capital . . . these dont take damage from physical or lightning . . . :steamsad:

(I was still learning the Friede Scythe, that is much faster and light but also much less damage. . . still, when I get tired of trying the boss because scythe deal less than half the damage of the greataxe, I take my Greataxe/Dragsonlayer Greataxe and do the job).
