Goliath Armors Seem Underwhelming
So for my first playthrough I went through the game using Operator-class armors (and single-rigged weapons). While I liked some of them more than others I felt that they were all relatively balanced and that I could reasonably build a character around them.

Now for my new playthrough I decided to try something a bit different and focus on Goliath Armors with Heavy Duty weapons. I've been getting on well with the Rhino armor, the combat feels good and the power usage feels fine relative to the benefits.

The problem is the rest of the Goliath armors just seem incredibly underwhelming. I crafted a set of Black Cerberus armor figuring that would be a logical upgrade over the Rhino and was completly underwhelmed. The armor isn't bad it's just that the benefits it confurs don't seem to justify the fact that power usage increased by 29. The other Goliath armors seem to suffer from the same problem, huge increases in power usage for relatively little benefit (except for the Ogre gear, that's fine it's just to ugly to use).

I guess if you're in a high NG+ where you're got a ton of excess power then it might be worth it but for a first run it doesn't seem worth the power.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Also why on earth do Sentinel armors have better defense than Goliath armors?

I think that there is a preconception at play here that isn't reflected in the gameplay.

You (and others) are conflating Goliath armor with being 'tanky' when the design process behind them is far more 'brute', hence their extremely high impact and stability. The Goliaths are built for massive damage and knockdown, not taking hits.

Sentinels on the other hand are very much 'tanks', with their modifiers heavily impacting health, stamina, and resistances.

Operators are evasive damage dealers with tremendous benefits to movement, attack speed, and decreased energy costs so you can load up more high-cost implants.

Just something I've observed.

That's a fair point with regards to Sentinel versus Goliath armor defense but it doesn't really address the rest of the issue.

If the only reason to use Goliath armors is the high Impact and Stability (which are good) then you get those benefits from the Rhino armor. So the only reason to use the other Goliath armors is the special abilities which are nice but not really worth the huge power cost compared to Rhino.

Rhino armor has a power cost of 19, which is in the same range as Operator armors (in fact the Nanite armor has 19 as well). This actually feel fair, you get higher defense, stability and impact at the cost of attack speed, stamina usage and the loss of the Nanite armor's excellent special ability. But moving from there to any of the other Goliath armors feels like you're paying a lot of core power for minimal benefit.

i agree with you, the core power costs are brutal. in my game with core power 250 in ng+++ it does not matter but in ng its really hard to use. the fashion of black cerberus is awsome, but really expensive

Surprisingly, Goliath armor work *amazingly* well with twin-rigged builds.

Like nullforceomega said, Goliath is all about aggressive attacks not defense.

All armour sets should cost the same amounts of core power IMO.*

They're all side-grades to one another anyway. It is not like Goliath is "the best".

*On a per-class basis, not that all individual sets should cost the same.
