What's the best staff in the game?
Currently going with the Spitfire Rod v1.0, plannig to get the 2.0 in NG+.

I was looking at the Wiki and despite the Carmina having way better proficency, the base damage is also waaaaaaaaaay lower!

How does it work? What's the best among the 2?

I used Spitfire Rod 2.0 for quite some time to skill up my proficiency. It has some nice move set but it is too slow for me--its attack speed is marked as medium. I decided to test few other staffs and realized that MG Negotiator is ultra fast compared to other staffs.

MG Negotiator is weaker than rest of staffs but it compensate its lower damage but much faster attack speed. I made MG Negotiator my go-to staff and upgraded it to MK20. Be warned that dash-attack + vertical follow-up is broken--it either has problems with hit detection or it is way too slow to be effective. My standard attack pattern is dash-attack (poke) followed up by horizontal attack followed up by horizontal whirl and slam.

I prefer Spitfire Rod v2.0 myself. Setting enemies on fire is so satisfying. I never used Carmina so much, though I did use the Peacekeeper which is similar. I'd rather use a weapon with a spread of damage than the all eggs in one basket approach.

Ha, will have to wait until ng+ for that!

Peacekeeper. It's the MG Negotiator on steroids.

Dammit, too bad I have to wait until NG+.

So the low damage is somehow balanced by speed/moveset?

It would depend on preference, I actually gave Irena the Peacekeeper back in NG+ in favour of the Spitfire Rod v2.0 partly to see what happens later in the game. I would rather do more damage per hit than more hits for same damage.

Peacekeeper, as it has the best moveset. It's also fast and allows for some great combos. Combined with sentinel or goliath armor for the increased impact rating, you can stagger enemies quickly and easily.

i would think that not putting your damage in one type would lead to split damage reduction. in dark souls games splint damage could reduce your dps by half. i started to notice a similar thing here when using the buff implants. they were elemental damage vs. flat damage. now at end game a +15 damage buff increases each hit by 15, but the elemental damage listed with +15 gives +9 on all types of targets.

unless fighting a robot you start to lose out with elemental even against armored limbs

Familiarity helps with the damage... also, the Carmina is quite nice with higher familiarity (proficiency).

I don't like staffs, so I don't know the names of them.

But the one with the nanite goo on the end of the stick seems to be the best?

It's the one I like the most, but "best" is probably Peacekeeper.

The nanite goo staff is Carmina.

actually the carmina is the best staff, the damage is only slightly lower but it has higher proficiency scaling so especially if you use exclusively staffs the carmina will be better
