Chosing one will give you two piece of gear at the begining. That's it.
I would suggest you to go for the lynx, it will be easier to complet your first set of gear that way.
But my playstyle was to get the hardest hitting weapon and just attack the mobs either with a forward dash or running slide-in, and killing them off right away with 2-3 hard hits (usually just one combo). Watching the videos i see people playing around with them, blocking, going around, etc. I straight up charge in and tear everyone apart in 3 seconds.
Also, why the PAX weapon blade so OP? It has mad base damage, like 83 at mk-II upgrade. It hits like a truck. No other weapon (so far after Firebug) has such big base damage and good stats too (my weap proficiency is lv 17, could that be it? How does weap proficiency scale on average? How much +base damage per 1lv of proficiency)? But even other weapons from this class aren't as good, the ones almost at the end of area 2 (after firebug)
I can't really answer your question about proficiency. I don't really pay attention to it. I generally swap weapon/build every time I can when i do a playthrough. For the end game, as long as it's above 10, you shouldn't have to worrry about the damage of a weapon type.
If you want to know more about weapons damage, you can look at the wiki : https://thesurge.wiki.fextralife.com/Damage
If it's not clear, don't hesitate to ask question.
You won't really see a lot of build variety in the different playthrough uploaded on youtube. I encourage you to look at the build I made for the wiki : https://thesurge.wiki.fextralife.com/Builds
Maybe you'll discover a new way to enjoy the gameplay.
