I prefer the elmental damage resistance set but the your first starting set has way better mobility

In the grand scheme of things, it matters very little - Upgrading materials are plentiful (Except Mk5, which is an exception and there's just enough to upgrade a single full set + weapon) so you can experiment with any set you find. The notable sets, though:

Liquidator: Immune to poison gas and toxic slime
Iron Maus: Has 0 core cost
MG Gorgon: Stamina regen
Elite Hazmat: Like the Liquidator, but better stats
Bloody PROTEUS: My personal favorite, endgame heavy armor with a +25% healing gain (And a passive regen that's basically worthless)
Black Cerberus: Hardest set to obtain by far, but also the best-looking one.

I'll keep that in mind

You can just go with whatever you like. I stayed with the RHINO armor for the first two areas then decided to try out LYNX and now have a mish mash of LYNX and Liquidator. Going to go full liquidator once I have all the components I need to make the rig.

Upgrading the Lynx is not a bad idea, if you want the maximum dps, because it boosts attack speed.
You can wear the liquidator set when required in toxic heavy areas, but I stick to the lynx until I get the Chrysalis set because it boosts attack speed even more (3% vs 5%)

PS After finishing the gmae multiple times, Iron Mouse becomes a great Armor set to wear to implement some sort of role playing element :-D

Lynx - If you prefer fast, evading combat
Gorgon - If you are masher and want overally best set
Black Cerberus - If you prefer look (my favorite one)

black cerebus, if used with a few capacitors to keep your energy up, adds a pretty hefty elemental damage boost that scales the higher level your weapons get(100+ in ng's)
