Why does the right side of the comparison looked squished as if gravity is 10 times stronger squashing things down? Did the original really look like that? It's been a while since I've last played.
It's because the guy who made the video was playing an emulator with the game stretched to 16:9. He points it out in the description.

Ah, I see. I only watched the embedded video so I missed the description. hmm... stretching aspects ratios seems like a poor choice for a comparison video. But regardless of stretched aspect ratios or not, it's clear the new release is a step up up. I'm excited. :D

I still can't believe that they lost the original background assets. Like seriously. One would think that they would put effort into preserving those assets like other companies do...
This happens all the time, sadly. The Infinity Engine Enhanced Edition games all had to upscale the low-resolution assets from the CD-ROMs because the original assets were lost; Babylon 5 will never be released on Blu-Ray because the original high-resolution CGI effects shots were lost.

In many cases, digital data is only preserved by accident, by employees taking things home. There's really not much effort put into preservation, as evidenced by the lackadasical (and sometimes anti-consumer) attitude of most console developers regarding backwards compatibility.

Basically, there's GOG and a few professionals trying to preserve the medium, and almost no one else.
Omg why did you mention that show and the inability to ever enjoy that on Blu-Ray D: You're making my 16 year younger self weep inside. I already had enough nostalgia for FF9 now I have to go watch that entire show.

It's SE they lost most of Kingdom Hearts 1 when they were doing 1.5 they had to redo most of KH1 cause all the assests were gone.

Wasn't there a large fire at Square? That might also have a lot to do with it.
I'm not even concerned right now with the textures. My problem is in the screenshots there are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pillarbox bars on the image. If the game is releasing like this, then no money for you Squeenix, I'll use an emulator and force render it at 1920x1080 kthx bye.

It better only do that if you choose 4:3 and otherwise 16:9 will be proper fullscreen.

The option to not/preserve the aspect ratio is in 7/8 on steam and will more than likely be in 9's launcher as well.

Ah. I Googlayed a little bit and realized there was an option after posting, thank the gods. Or will supposedly be an option, as you said, and it was in 7 and 8 so it's cool.

honestly guys if the backgrounds are at least 640x480 ill be happy
I think 320x240 is the safest best, considering how all the "HD screenshots" Square-Enix has released have been... sub-HD. 640x480 would be the absolute highest (as that's the greatest supported resolution of the PS1).

Possibly upscaled and filtered to look less (or more, depending on how little time they spend with Photoshop) terribad.
