Vivi's Origin

With distinct appearance do you think by any chance Vivi came from the Heartless (an enemy from Kingdom Hearts) clan? FF9 was released on 2001 while KH on 2002.

OR

Heartless is based from Vivi's appearance.

The black mage look was the same ever since FFI, so perhaps the design team took some similarities from the black mage appearance when coming up with the shadow heartless. Though honestly, even though i can see it now you've said, the thought never crossed my mind even when vivi was in kh2 lol

FF and Kingdom Hearts' stories do not canonically intertwine, so the Heartless have absolutely nothing to do with Vivi in the world of FFIX.

Not a chance. Vivi's appearance was based on the classic Black Mage design for FF, as a lot of designs were. IX was supposed to be a greatest hits of FF and a celebration of the series. I think the Heartless are remarkably simply designed considering Nomura's penchant for belts etc.

As others have said, Vivi's design is based around the classic Black Mage look. The first FF dropped in the West in 1990, giving that design a solid twelve year lead on the Heartless. Sorry to poke a hole in that theory.

As for the Heartless being based on Vivi--unlikely. They're just black, shadowy creatures with yellow eyes; that design isn't anything new, really. Have a look at the "Night on Bald Mountain" section of Disney's Fantasia--or, really, any Disney film that features a dark, shadowy presence lurking just beyond the light; the eyes are almost always yellow, and the form inky in nature. It's a design to prompt a fear response in the audience, nothing else.

It -does- seem a bridge too far to compare the design of two fictional characters to real-world racism. I can sort of see the argument, but it's a stretch.

Yes a stretch just like the original comparison.... also i couldn't think of a better example.

If you'd cared to read the rest of the thread, you'd have seen that several people already made this correction (or some form thereof).

It appears you're sorely lacking in this "paying attention" skill you're so proud of, after all.

That said, as someone who's been an FF fan since the first game dropped in the West back in 1990, I have to say--the FF fandom can be the most barb-ridden bunch of folks on the planet sometimes (not you, in particular). This is particularly true when they cross paths with other fandoms.

Whatever happened to just liking what we like, gently correcting mistakes as we find them, and not letting what should be fun (games) get under our skin as if it's a personal affront?
