As others have said, Vivi's design is based around the classic Black Mage look. The first FF dropped in the West in 1990, giving that design a solid twelve year lead on the Heartless. Sorry to poke a hole in that theory.
As for the Heartless being based on Vivi--unlikely. They're just black, shadowy creatures with yellow eyes; that design isn't anything new, really. Have a look at the "Night on Bald Mountain" section of Disney's Fantasia--or, really, any Disney film that features a dark, shadowy presence lurking just beyond the light; the eyes are almost always yellow, and the form inky in nature. It's a design to prompt a fear response in the audience, nothing else.

that's racist yo.
You might as well have said black people came from the heartless too....
Well this conversation just took a violent lurch in the wrong direction.
(made about the same amount of sense except black people aren't published by squenix)
Also how was that violent?!?
It -does- seem a bridge too far to compare the design of two fictional characters to real-world racism. I can sort of see the argument, but it's a stretch.
(any character from games where you can't see their face just their eyes)
Also Black people are real?!?
If you'd cared to read the rest of the thread, you'd have seen that several people already made this correction (or some form thereof).
It appears you're sorely lacking in this "paying attention" skill you're so proud of, after all.
Yes, yes, just had to point out that "KH" bit though. Getting so tired of it being thought as canon in the FF-verses is all, seriously. Decided to skim over the bits though to put that out. Call it a "venting" of sorts, i'll stop now though. ^^;
No worries, I've had those moments myself, so I'll not judge unfairly.
That said, as someone who's been an FF fan since the first game dropped in the West back in 1990, I have to say--the FF fandom can be the most barb-ridden bunch of folks on the planet sometimes (not you, in particular). This is particularly true when they cross paths with other fandoms.
Whatever happened to just liking what we like, gently correcting mistakes as we find them, and not letting what should be fun (games) get under our skin as if it's a personal affront?
That's not directed at you, Rookie--just a general lament on my part.
I understand, and thank you for understanding. :)
