20Gb of harddrive space?
How come on the store page it is stated as requiring 20Gb of space? Is this a placeholder? Can I expect HD assets? I can fit it easily just curious why soo much.

Lightning Returns is 21Gb...I don't understand how FF9 would require that much :FFXIIImog:

HD FMV's and probably uncompressed audio for the music, sfx etc. There's also the new HD models for the characters..either way I'm not too bothered. Most games releasing anymore are 20 gigs average.

Ah okay thanks for the reply. I was a little concerned due to FF7 and FF8 being 3 and 4Gb respectively and seeing this made me very confused.

if it like RE 4 UHD it will have a set of cutscenes for each resolution eating up space.

There is literally no excuse for uncompressed audio ever for a game. That is what losslessly compressed file formats are for. That said, I'm not claiming they are doing that.

90% will be videos. 4K upscaled versions of the low-res ps1 vids?

I'll personally skip if its this obscenely huge. No asset quality can justify such a massive storage/download size..

The original game fitted on 4 CDs. I'd rather the default game version released on Steam have low-res grainy videos, with anything bigger being an optional download for those with infinite bandwidth and ultrafasft internet connections.

It was compressed to make it fit on 4 cds. Most games now a days are 20+ gigs.

It wasn't "compressed" any more than usual; modern art assets just take up more room (and pre-rendered video takes up a ton of space). You can be assured it's not "uncompressed" video though. It is hard to understate how much room uncompressed or even lossless video takes up. It is insane. Lossless audio is nothing in comparison.
Hard Core Rikki 8 ENE 2016 a las 6:32 a. m.
Compressability of "modern art assets" in 2015 well exceeds whatever was available in the ps1 era, even for lossless upscales and original assets.
Higher resolution, higher quality at what, a maximum of double the original size for videos?

20GB is still indefensible. We'll see soon enough if it was even justified (maybe we wont have MIDI music this time), or just artificially increased beyond logical.

It's still just as compressed as before because it's just an uprezzed PS1 game. You won't get true 1080p FMVs. It'll still be the same old 320x240 (or whatever resolution they were) FMVs. They don't have the source code and assets anymore.

20 GBs for a port of a 16 year old game with prerendered backgrounds is beyond ridiculous. FFVII and VIII are normal sized games on PC as they were originally on PS1 and in the original PC versions. How are they inflating the size of IX like this? It shouldn't be like this. It should frankly not even be allowed.

Do you have 20gb of space in your HDD? If you don't, then I understand. If you have 20GB of HDD, then why even bother asking this question?

Just because you can doesn't mean you should, dummy.

What's wrong with them upgrading the game? If your complaining about 20gigs for a game in todays world then stop playing video games.

The "they don't have the source code and assets anymore" is a rumor that comes up a lot, but never with any sources or evidence. The fact they have modified the game as much as they have suggests they in fact had the source code.

Most of the time people repeat this rumor (I am guilty of this myself a couple years ago) it's in reference to reading only the topic title of the NeoGAF "the lost art of FFIX" topic, but in that very same topic it says it is talking about the loss in conversion to art that the PS1 can handle and not that SE literally lost the assets.

20GB is ludicrous. I guess you have to know a little (even just a little) about media format sizes to understand why.

We'll see what it looks like. It is entirely possible however they did re-render the FMVs in HD. That would explain it. A shame it looks like they don't have the higher resolution backgrounds though.

They can't possibly upgrade the game in a way that justifies a 1000% increase in size.
And I have a right to complain about games being 20GBs, especially when they're ports of decade-old games. This utter lack of efficiency in today's game development is inexcusable. Of course I have the HDD storage space for games that are 20GBs, but I shouldn't have to give that space up for one game and I won't, because I have standards. If I ever want to play FFIX again I'll happily emulate my PS1 version and I'll only have to make space for 2GBs instead of 20 and it'll be better too, because it's the original.
