FF7 has become one of my favourite games ever despite not growing up with it back in the day - I didn't play it until around 2014 on my PS3. It wasn't even my first Final Fantasy game; that was 9 and I still enjoyed 7 more.
9 can be a bit slow at times as well as some of the side quests not being that fun or interesting, which is another reason why I prefer 7. That game never gets boring for me, and that's coming from someone who isn't that big of a fan of RPGs.
9 may be more technically polished and definitely holds up better than 7, but I would much rather play a technically flawed game that's a lot more more interesting like 7.
I also enjoyed getting the trophies more on 10 than I have done on 9. To the point, I'm never getting 2 of the trophies on 9, and those are the skipping one (1000 is just plain moronic) and the guessing the right person 9 times in a row. Even though I say I'll never get either of these, I'll probably still end up wasting hours of my life trying once I've finally gotten all of the others, just for me to be able to say I 100%'d the game.
As for 8, I really don't see how people can like this one. The Junction system, to me was one of the worst, if not the worst, system they ever created. Let's also not forget that it's a BAD idea to level up in 8, since it makes the game a lot more difficult. So, a MASSIVE part to an RPG game becomes something that you should never do, meaning you're just there for the story and to "speed-run" it, so to speak.
I'll disagree about the junction system, though - I felt it gave me a lot more customisation for my party members compared to 9 where every character could only use certain spells and abilities which felt like they were chosen for me. I never even used any of my magic spells I stocked up either, not because they decrease my stats, but because I never needed to anyway.
Believe me, I know what bad RPGs are like since I've played Sonic Chronicles on DS and Final Fantasy 2, the latter of which was more tedious than it was fun mainly due to the weird character growth system.
And if you thought FF8 discouraging battles was bad, the latest two Paper Mario games on 3DS and Wii U force you to use finite resources just to use basic attacks and gives you absolutely nothing from battles at all, meaning it's a lot better to just avoid enemies outright thus making battles completely pointless. At least FF8 gave you EXP and AP for your GFs thus giving you a reason to battle enemies and didn't force you to deplete finite resources for basic attacks.
I know how the junction system works and know how to break it pretty early on, but I can see the customisation on 9 being very lackluster. I can also see the flaws of 9, especially the battle system (Where Haste and Slow and practically useless for their intended purpose), or some of the status abilities like float needing to be re-cast every turn otherwise it falls off.
I never said 8 was bad, just one of my least favourite Final Fantasy games. The majority of FF games are SO much better than other RPG's out there, including 8. The Tetra Master game is also one of my most favourite mini-games out of the whole series, and I love the control you have of that too.
But, the whole point of haste and slow in a game is to slow the enemy, allowing you to get more attacks in, or speeding you up, having the same effect. ff9's battle system doesn't really allow this, unless you abuse the ATB wait timer (As I mentioned above).
But this also is the reason that casting haste on someone or casting slow on the boss is just pointless and a waste of a turn, since by the time the person who cast these spells get's their next turn, they either have to do it again, or ignore the fact that it's fallen off.
