Is Amarant useless? (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)

I always questioned myself this, since Amarant joins pretty late on disc 3. And at that moment I already invested quite a bit in other characters and I end not ever using him. Even Quina I used more then Amarant. Is there any thing good about this character that I might have overlooked?

It is not so bad, combined with vivi his chakra is very good.

Quina is probably the best char in the game, easy 9999 dmg, useful magic and nice hp.

Chakra has good synergy with Freya's abilities. Revive is also good and Spare Change is really good on the end game bosses. I found him immensely better than Quinna.

It's all down to play style though. Surprisingly there's a huge Quinna following which I never understood. The character was weird, annoying, in combat she sucked so much unless you invested heavily in her/him/it by which point she's only "Okay." Red wasn't great, but he had his uses and could make some fights incredibly easy.

I always liked Amarant, primarily because of Chakra.
With it, you can basically always have MP Attack on, and spam spells with everyone (even Vivi) without worrying too much about mana. His physical attacks are nothing to scoff at either.

He is a good support character and also works well as a secondary healer. Best when used with Garnet, Vivi, or Eiko. Personaly, I find the throw skill kind of useless. I say give him a shot, but try to keep in mind that he is a support character. Overall, just play with who you like and enjoy. They are all useful and unique and you might have fun with a different playstyle.

I remember him being very powerful when I had him join but I didn't grind like crazy and my levels are always relatively low in RPGs (simply my play style)

Not useless at all. Chakra is the most reliable way to restore MP without having to resort to using ethers. White Draw and Osmose are too unreliable since they are random and can end up restoring no MP at all and wasting a turn. As a support character his usefulness doesn't end there, he has Aura which is basically a better version of Quina's Auto-Life since it also gives Regen status as well. He's also unique in the sense that he's the only non white mage character that has an ability similar to Life - Revive.
Stats wise, Amarant is the 2nd fastest character with his speed only being beaten by Zidane and good strength growth so he's a great physical attacker as a result when paired with MP attack and No Mercy.

He gives MP to Vivi so Vivi can continuously spam his most powerful attacks. But that's literally it. Feed Vivi while he nukes trash from orbit.

I really never dug in that deep into Chakra, I am guessing that's what I am getting for ignoring Amarant. Especially since I love using magic. Damn...

I tend to find late game chars useless, because by that point I heavily invested on those that were with me from the beginning, same case as Magus in Chronno Trigger, he was a powerhouse by himself though but I simply didn't like you played only the late 5% of the game and his lack on combos with other chars didn't help at all...

Amarant suffers from the same for me...

No Mercy does a lot of damage. And he has a Revive.
