my favorite party was always Zidane, Vivi, dagger, and freya. i loved to teach vivi reflect 2x and dagger autoreflect and then target her with all vivi's spells. freya i loved becasue ive always had a passionate love for the dragoon characters in ff games......kain.....cid.....freya.....etc

My main party was always Zidane, Vivi, Garnet and Steiner. Tasty vanilla.

I always felt like it made the most sense. They all seemed to have the strongest story connection to one another. I hated Steiner at first but good ol' Rusty grew on me quickly especially with how he and Master Vivi bonded. Garnet and Zidane grow feelings for one another while Steiner gets madder as the plot goes on, but still fights alongside the monkey because of the Princess. And at the finale they actually put aside their differences and respect one another. Fantastic.

Plus it's always fun having Steiner get Berserk'd and then watching while he one-shot Zidane out of nowhere (been a while but I remember it happening a lot, it was hilarious).

Everything fits from a storytelling perspective which is important for me during RPGs. I did shuffle people around for Freya because I loved her style and used her whenever possible. Eiko was fun as a side character but I didn't main her in my parties. Garnet is my preferred Summoner. I didn't like Amarant too much and I never used Quina unless I was forced to.

I also have a really strong habbit of switching characters in during their respective story events. For example I rarely if ever used Eiko BUT if I end up doing a segment in the story where Eiko is actually an important character, or has bonus scenes, or it just makes sense for her to be up there, I'll always adjust my party to put in the most relevant characters.

Thankfully in FFIX there were a couple times in the story where the entire party did end up splitting up, thus forcing me to use different teams. I always enjoyed those sections.

Character wise I like the default party too since they are the first you come across in the game and you are likely to get attached to them more than the later characters. The default party of Zidane, Vivi, Garnet and Steiner is also very balanced with 2 strong tanky physical attackers, 1 magic attacker and 1 healer.
A party consisting of Amarant and Vivi is a very strong combo as well and is good for wiping out several enemies at once. Just equip Auto-Reflect on everyone and have Vivi reflect his own spells at all enemies while Amarant provide him with infinite MP via Chakra. I usually use a party with Zidane, Dagger/Eiko, Freya and Steiner for the bosses later. Physical attackers are very good against single targets like bosses but they don't perform as well in normal battles since they lack target-all abilities. Steiner have Stock Break/Climhazzard but they cost a lot of MP and his max MP is below average so it's not great.

Zidane, Dagger, Freya, and I'm not sure on the fourth. I don't hate any of the characters though I never gave Quina much of a chance, Eiko annoys me, and I always forget Amarant exists. Choosing between Vivi and Steiner is hard though. I like them both.

Zidane, Vivi, Dagger, Steiner.

I agree 100% with Luminaraius.

Plus, I've always liked having two "attackers", a White Mage or Summoner, and a Black Mage.

Having played through the game multiple times, I like each character for different reasons, different party line-ups are always fun and I'll probably experiment a lot with this release. But I digress.

Zidane. Even if he weren't required I'd still use him. I always have a thief in my party, and in this game the items you can steal are actually really really good.

Quina. Once you start to get some of the really good blue magics s/he is a powerhouse and can even be your primary healer. Mighty Guard is AMAZING.

Freya. Always loved dragoons, always will. Her moves are for the most part underwhelming, but they're not all that useless plus she has a guaranteed 9999 move if you farm enough dragons.

Eiko. Decent summons. Heals. Once she gets Holy she's a great addition to the party. Her and Vivi are the only ones who can do more than 9999 with their Trances (Double Holy, Double Flare or whatever.)

I like these too, but, I like quina for her damage too. you catch enough frogs and your frog drop does 9999 for the cheapest amount of mana. she/he is one of the best characters but the least considered.
so this would be one of the best setups good healing and protection and damages. multiple 9999
Honestly though, from all my playthroughs i can't really choose. I know that's a cop out in itself. But i love garnet vivi and despite the fact that steiner doesn't get as much love he's still pretty powerful.

Zidane, Dagger/Garnet, Vivi/boss, Ol' rusty. Love that combo. When I want to power lvl I use Quina and lvl5 death on those dragons for some crazy exp.

Ah, yes, the hipster team.

What's the gameplay like with a team like this? Any cool synergy?

I've never played with this crew so I'm curious. =p

Zidane, Dagger, Quina and Freya. I don't think I've really ever bothered with Eiko or Amarant in any of my playthroughs.

I like this team too, it doesn't rely too much on combo play/synergy. It's quite versatile, and two healers ensure survivalability (sp?) of the party.

Quina's has a few downside: his/her damage with the fork is pitiful due to its randomness and calculation formula, and it takes time to "eat" monsters, but his/her blue magic is awesome. You could do anything, really, White Wind for MT unreflectable heal, Frog Drop for damage, Mighty Guard for MT protect and shell, Angel's Snack for MT Remedy, etc.

Amarant is servicable as a second attacker, and occasional MP refiller with Chakra.

As much as i love ALL the characters especially Vivi, my fav party is Zidane,Dagger,Freya and Quina.
If im in memoria i'd like to switch either Zidane or Quina for Steiner.
If doomsday glitch wasnt prevalent i would use Vivi sometimes because it heals the party and damages the enemy.

But Freya is the most OP character in the game !!!!
She and Quina will prove to be the most useful.

Zidane (usually stuck in party)
Dagger (summons with magic stones power up) I use Bahamut/Odin/Atomos constantly :)
Quina is main support, Dagger never has to use white magic.
Freya is super strong physically and magically and i dont mean Dragon Crest. Essential.

I never use Amarant or Eiko, rarely Vivi.
But i always try to squeeze Steiner in ofc.

Zidane, Dagger, Vivi, Freya
Get everyone set up with dark absorbing or null armor/accessories, then use Doomsday on Vivi and have Freya use White draw every once in a while. Damages everything for 9999 damage, but heals (or worst case scenarios, does nothing) to the team and you never run out of MP doing it. Best synergy in th game.

Thats exactly what i was saying, but its glitched so sometimes it doesnt work and the party dies anyway, even though you have shadow absorbing equipment.
Tried it many times through the years, you should try it and confirm it to make sure, because its never worked for me at least, hence why i just brought it up before you ^
Zidane, Eiko, Steiner, and Freya :)
