Abilities question

I am confused about abilities.

I am just starting, in the forest after you crash land. Zidane has a silk shirt that I equipped. It has two abilities:

A - Fire
A - Lightning (I think)

Both of them are greyed out. How do I use them? The only ability I can actually equip and use is the Flee-Gil ability.

1. Why can't I use the other abilities from the other equipment I am wearing?

2. Also - I found some items, like a helmet and better gauntlets, but Zidane can't equip them. Are there items that only certain characters can wear? Do I have to wait until I get more dudes in my party to equip them?

1. Not all characters learn all skills. Vivi can learn the skills (spells) from that shirt, Zidane cannot. Also, each skill learned from eq, has an ap number, when you have gained enough ap to learn that skill, it is permanent for that character.

2. As not all characters can learn all skills, not all characters can use all eq. heavy armor type eq is used by warrior-types like Steiner, where Zidane is a thief.

Hope that helps clear up some confusion.

The Silk Shirt teaches those abilities, but they are Black Magic. Zidane is a Thief, so he can't learn them. That's why they're grey. Same for the armor you found, that's for Knight/Dragoon.

Right-Click on your game in the Library, click Player Manual and there are info about Learning Abilities and other useful info you might have read.

Thanks. I did read the manual, but it didn't really explain anything about abilities and items that were greyed out.

Sometimes helps to re-read a manual after playing a bit, as you can find some things make more sense after experiencing gameplay.
