You have to talk to the Moogles you see throughout the game, also when you get the world map, you get a Moogle Flute that lets you save in the world map.
I hope this helps answer your question. ^-^
I know this post is very, very old. But I'm here because I found it with an earnest to date concern. And would like to shed light. Recently I bought a new PC and had lost my FF9 save, however recovering and copy/pasting the file from above said area works like a charm. Not only that, but if you accidentally messed up a single achievement, like say ragtime mouse since you can NEVER answer him wrong and don't want to run another 12 hour speed run, many people file share saves at the points of getting these achievements. Don't stress it too much if you can't get a certain one, many useful community guides out there. Heads up, in 2024 link scams are on the rise. Don't click links from freshly created guides. Look for the ones with like 40 trophies and are old/unmodified
