For FF7 (before the ypatched it) and FF8; they were rereleases of the original PC versions of the game that used midi versions of the soundtrack. PCs back in the late 90's and early 2000's had a wide array of sound cards and chips that sounded different from one another (before it was practical to use like oggs and mp3s for in game music), whereas the PS1 always had the same hardware.
Please spread awareness on this issue of the compression, because it is quite unacceptable. If you are one of the gamers who thinks the sound is the same, please refrain from posting and just move along.
