I generally used a suposedly weak card to start, then a bunch of what I assumed were stronger cards, and always finished with the Theater Ship card. Worked most of the time, lol

And there is this great and in-depth guide on Wiki :
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Tetra_Master_%28minigame%29
I win most of the time. My strategy is to use one low level card with arrows all over, for bait. Then I have 3 better cards, - and lastly a nice high level trumph, to claim everything back in my last move .
And if I loose, I simply go to title, then press "Continue" - starting from entering the area.
I also save whenever my cards go up in level, and when I get a card I really want.
When there are nice high level cards to find, like "Lindblum" ( great card for defence) - it is wise to go to title and load "continue", if the card does not have the arrows you want.
Every time you load, you start the area anew, and the card has different stats and arrow-pattern.
Same with cards you win at Treno fighting - load and start the fight again, and the card you want, will eventually be yours.
For now, about half way into the game, I use one card for column 1 or 2 -, and then I use "Tonberry" "Zemzelett"( those are both great as trumph - for defence and/or attack), "Lindblum" - and as bait together with the low level card; one "Frog" or "Mythril Sword" card .
There is a rumour that npc`s are reluctant to play their nice cards, if you hold back yours, - so I usually play "Lindblum" early, leaving it in a corner to defend itself. It does a great job, now levelled up to 0A6A
This is a bit random , but not very much - there are rules for how random, and this card game is actually both complex and clever , and lots of fun when you figure it out
