In terms of optimal parties:

Zidane, Quina, Freya and Steiner.

All characters can deal 9999 easily, Quina and Freya can heal.

My personal party that I enjoy using though is

Zidane, Steiner, Vivi and Amarant

Party I usually end up with is Zidane, Quina, Freya and Amarant. Never use Garnet or Eiko.

As much as I love the summon magic in this game, I'd say Zidane, Vivi, Quina, and Freya.
I'm 100% anti-Amarant.

Zidane sums it up part way into the game when Quina shows up again: "Oh, I forgot about you."

The game kind of giving a nod to people that don't like the character oddly made me like Quina a little more.

Honestly though I do frequently forget Amarant exists.

As for the topic, I'm not sure. Zidane, Dagger, and Freya are my favorites and I don't know about the fourth. I want to say Vivi, but I want to pair him with Steiner, and things get complicated there. I've never been a fan of Eiko even if I know she's powerful. I do not hate her, but I like Dagger way better as a character.

Well I do hate the unfortunately written love triangle that comes off as unrealistic and creepy. I think I try to mix things up honestly late game.

do you mean 'physical' design or 'gameplay' design? I actually love Quina quirky unique FF look. Her gameplay design is the most OP. An essential level 1 runs char. Her limited glove and night is abusable.

10 mana 9999 damage spam for uber bosses

Auto-life , Mighty Guard & Angel Snack

All her other damaging spells are fun to use too. You can basically do a lot of things using her.

Hmmm, I think my favorite party in my current playthrough would be Zidane, Vivi, Dagger and Quina. Which is strange since back when I playing this for my first playthough back in the ye olde days of PS1, I had Zidane, Dagger, Eiko and Armarant, I really sucked at making parties back then. XD

Looking back, it's probably why I died to the final boss a couple times before managing to scrape though by the skin of my teeth. XD

My naive mind back then thought 'I should have two healers, that way I can keep my characters alive all the time' and Armarant's throw ability was handy.

But now that I'm playing it again, I've gained a new respect for Quina now that I'm learning his/her blue magic skills. :3

So this playthough, I decided to go with the group that I mentioned above first as my favorite party. ^-^

I think from now on, I'm going to stick with Zidane, VIvi, Dagger and Quina now. They're definately my favorite party. XD

On my first playthrough I went Zidane,Steiner,Freya and Dagger.

However, the best party if you ask me is: Zidane,Freya,Amarant and Dagger.

** Zidane, Amarant, Vivi, and Steiner **
- Everyone floats.
- Everyone has reflect. Vivi has 2x reflect
- Zidane and Amarant steal, throw, and slash the living hell out of anything for my melee moves.
- Vivi casts on himself so it can reflect twice as hard on enemy for my magic moves.
- Steiner (with Vivi in party) is the hybrid melee/magic class. Sometimes I need more melee, sometimes I need more magic. Steiner is flexible and I like that. Also, his trance rocks.

Zidane, Eiko, Amarant, and Freya/Steiner. Freya's more fun, but Steiner has more power. Amarant is the ultimate support, Eiko has better white magic, and Zidane has his Trance abilities and damage+speed.
