Adult Situations
As "kiddie" as the designs are, Cid isn't coy or sugar coating things when he tells Dagger that he cheated on his wife.

Not something with precedence in the series. Marriage, when it's been featured in FF up to this point, has largely been happy. There is an old man in Troia who spies on chicks while his wife looks around for him, to wit. But even that is npc dialogue that the player might not see.

FF9 wears no such kid gloves. It's interesting to me that they would put that into a game that looks like this. Even back in 2000, a lot of their 1987 fans were starting to grow up and get married.

It isn't a thing that FF has gone back to, either, so far as I know. Marital unfaithfulness I mean.

It's easy for a discussion like this to devolve into "Cid yes" and "Cid no" camps, and I fully expect this to happen, but don't find such an argument interesting. I just find it fascinating that such mature subject matter even made it into a game in the first place.

That's mature in a way that curse words and bare breasts aren't, you know?

I have chosen the wrong place to start a discussion about anything relating to maturity

Steam forums are not the best place to start.

And then there's games like FFVII, which shows terrorism, prostitution, multiple counts of attempted rape, implied rape of a heterosexual male by multiple males, sex dungeons, hallways filled with the blood of slaughtered people, people getting shot and impaled on swords, an attempt to get a girl to mate with an animal, an attempt to execute a person in a gas chamber, etc, etc. :)

Yes.. But what bits of FFVII DIDN'T you like? lol

I believe what you meant to say was:

The internet is not the best place to start.

The main ideas of FFIX, about different motivations and life purposes for different people, are pretty mature, playing it during ages 12-16 can help a lot of players to grow up a little bit.

And yes, this is pretty unique for final fantasy franchise, something similar was in VII, but here it is made more structured and not so raw as it was in VII.

Yeah, just when you might feel this game is a bit too cartoony when you first see Regent Cid, bam! Grounded back in reality with real world problems!

The way the characters look has nothing to do with the subject matter.

It is funny that this line of thought has the adult jokes in the movie Zootopia fly straight over some adults' heads. Nooo, Disney would never mean that with the joke about what a three-humped camel is called! Most camels have one hump, including the ones seen in the movie, so if a three-humped camel is pregnant it doesn't take a genius to figure out that is actually a dirty joke.

I'm sure there are dozens of examples in all kinds of media.

FF IX may look like a kiddie game, but it isn't. Some of the themes are actually pretty mature, especially the ones regarding mortality. Vivi's story arc drives that point home especially hard.

I actually forgot that this game has swearing in it. Having a moogle shout bastard at me was amazing.
