Femme Fatales
when am I able to remove zidane from the group? I am at the point where I have the boat and can swap out party members but hes locked in so idk how to get this unless its story related.

You can do it in Memoria (final dungeon).

Unless I missed it in the PS1 version, or they have added this feature in the Steam release, Zidane is locked in the party for good, similar to previous FF titles.

in multiple ff the main character will get seperated or injured and then is removed for a bit its not uncommon...

Personally, I just didn´t choose any female party members to accompany Zidane to Oeilvert. That way the "femme fatales" party would automatically be formed to roam Desert Palace in the meanwhile. You won´t need any of the magic healer types in Oeilvert anyway, as the place blocks the use of spells.

You could do the same when reaching that part of the story, if you don´t wish to wait until reaching Memoria.

You're unable to swap zidane out of the party till the final dungeon. Memoria.

that is actually what I did too since it was shortly after aquiring the boat
