This is my experience as well.
There's a bar under yout ATB gauge that fills up as you take damage, once it gets full, that character goes into trance.
however i also noticed low encounter rate as you describe
In my opinion, i don't feel any difference between PS1 and PC version
However, if i turn on the no-encounter cheat (start button then Rt button), it's obvious that i don't get any battle ;).
Believe me, there's far less than the PS1 version. In dungeons, at least. World map encounter rate seems the same as PS1.
