Now, go to Madain Sari with Dagger in your team, and go to the kitchen and try to talk to Lani. She jumps away. I've heard this step may actually not be necessary, but do it anyway just to be safe.
Leave and re-enter without Dagger or Amarant in your team, and Lani won't run away. Talk to her twice, and she should mention the Eidolon Wall. If I remember right, nothing about writing in particular, just that there's something there? I'm sure you'll know when she says whatever she's supposed to.
Now go to the Eidolon Wall. At this point, it should have changed from it's usual camera angle, to a side scrolling one. If you move far enough to the left or right, you loop back to the entrance. You can read some background lore at the paintings of the eidolons. The "!" at the entrance allows you to leave.
This is what it should look like: http://i.imgur.com/enVspXr.png
When you enter, head to the right until you loop back to the entrance. You'll hear a chime just a bit after you move past the entrance "!" if you did it right. Now walk back to the left until you loop back to the entrance, just past the "!" again. Repeat this 9 times, going back and forth. Make sure you hear a chime each time.
On the ninth round, your HP/MP will be recovered and all status abnormalities removed, just like in the image above.
Now read the paintings. You can read them in any order, as long as you read them all. A whole slew of extra messages appear this time, after doing the nine loops. At the end, return to the Ifrit drawing and read the newly revealed message, revealing a message from Garnet's real father, revealing her and her mothers' name .
I'm 100% sure this step isn't actually necessary, as I got it done without this step in my current playthrough. Still, I must admit I forgot about this, so thanks.
