Edit:
Yeah, try more like 19-22 seconds, and longer than "3-5" even not counting the disc speed.
It's like 9ish seconds even not counting loading time and totally skipping the swirl. That's, putting it very generously, a minute of time wasted every six or seven battles.
I don't think considering 20 seconds wasted every single battle is impatient.
Edit 2:
To be clear, I'm not saying no one should wait for this mod's update. It's amazing what this mod does for the game. I'm just saying if someone really, really wants to play the game that (if they fixed the looping issue) the base version without the mod is not rock bottom bad, and I feel the drawn-out battle openings were possibly the very worst flaw in the original.
So, I looked up a video of FF9 PS1 gameplay and I counted 15 seconds (3-4 of which were the black screen because of CD-based loading). I know this is an emulator running this, but the load times seem similar which makes me believe the guy is likely running the game off of a real CD in the PC's optical drive (I did this for a few games myself, as doing so is easier than copying the whole CD to an .iso).
So okay not 3-5 seconds, but I dunno, when I'm playing it never seemed that long. *shrug*
As far as them "feeling it must be changed" I think it was more "we know the playerbase lately can't stand to wait so we gotta modernize this or they won't wanna play it" or some-crap, just like how they made FF13 and its sequels all flashy with 6 digit numbers popping up all over the screen and big flashy words and fancy phrases popping up all over the screen.
I find it rather obnoxious myself, and it's one of the reasons I won't play those games. No, I don't need constant stimulation like some casino slot machine that goes dingdingding every time something minor and routine happens.
EDIT:
Here's the video I'm referring to:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW_C8e-9GsI
The video was only to give an example of a typical battle as far as the time it takes from transition between field and battle screen. And yes, the video is 9 years old, obviously the emulator used in it is obsolete.
It has the same echo problem with its audio as sometimes happens on real hardware with Wild ARMs 1, not sure what causes the bug but sometimes the audio will get this echo chamber effect and the echo goes through the roof until you save your game and restart the machine, and last I checked some emulators always do that with WA1 too; I would surmise it has something to do with how the PS1 sound hardware handled echo and reverb effects that sometimes it was possible to flip a switch so-to-speak and it would come on and stay on and/or emulators didn't know how to work it properly back then.
And yeah, while playing I got used to it, but the time savings isn't trivial in my opinion when stretched over a whole run, specifically because due to some of that time being the camera being flashy.
I admit I was overly dramatic, but it is a reason I'm never going back to the original.
The original had way better looking font and menus, and while MoguriMod does restore the font... it's not exact sadly. And the menus look better with this new update, but still not like the original.
Kinda wish they could have restored the full original UI, fonts included. Maybe they will eventually who knows.
It doesn't work with the last update, we should wair to the next "moguiri mod" update :/
When deciding to try a mod out, it's usually a good idea to go to that mod's discussions and check the last 2 pages for any new relevant info.
An update was released for FF9 a week or so ago that broke MoguriMod and they are working to fix it.
Any insight on how they're going?
Also thank you so much to the modders, your work is excellent!
