Excalibur question

I know how to get it and know exactly what to do: buy the four rare items at Treno's auction, sell them to the adventurer and nobleman, then buy the magic fingertip. For some reason I can only get three of the four rare items. Did I do something wrong?

At what point in the story are you? When visiting Treno for the first time, only Griffin's Heart, Doga's Artifact and Une's Mirror are avaialable in auction slot one, two and three, respectively. The Rat Tail becomes available on Disc 3 and can be claimed before heading to the Desert Palace. It also appears in slot one, just as the Griffin's Heart. If one item doesn't show up, maybe other unique items have a higher priority or you are just unlucky. You could try to buy all the other unique items and equipment from the slot the item you are looking for is in. Best of luck.

I'm using my file on disc 4. That's when I usually wait for the excalibur sidequest. Got all four items but now I can't sell them. The PS1 version had a bug where if you sell too many items without hard resetting you couldn't sell any more and that's probably what happened to me. Bought two of them, sold them, then for some reason they appeared back at the auction. So I probably just need to go back to a different save file.

It's cool, I have decided to go for exalibur 2 anyways, so I'll get it on that go round, after getting E2 :D

I think I have the same problem. I besically bought 3/4 items as soon as I got to Treno and sold them a couple of times. No I'm on disc 3 and i bought all 4 key items back but the npc's won't buy them anymore. Plus I've visited Dagaro as well but the old man won't give me the quest to retrieve the magical finger. Is there anything to do? Am I doing something wrong?

The items you sell for the excalibur quest are SUPPOSED to show back up at the auction after you sell them. That's just the quest functioning correctly. You won't get the tip from the smith about the fingertip until a specific point in the story of "disc 3". I think he won't mention it until at least Ipsen's Castle has been finished.

Also it's worth noting that you can't just sell and rebuy the 4 items, you have to turn down the initial offer and sell them each for the 2nd higher offer. This isn't a detail I see mentioned many places, but I'm positive that's how it works. I used to have major issues getting Excalibur 1 when I was a kid, and most of my saves would miss it.
