ATB wait mode does nothing?
ATB wait mode should freeze other player's ATB bar while selecting ability, it currently does nothing.

It only works in the sub-menus (if you're in the magic menu, for example), not in the main menu (where you choose between attack, magic, steal, etc.).

FFX-2 had this problem too I noticed... not that I don't know my way around a Final Fantasy game... but the fact they KEEP programming it that way makes you wonder why they even bother throwing it in there to begin with. Battle should just.... stop once a bar is filled.

...I like Chess, you know. Used to be quite good at it back in the day.

The game is ridiculously easy even with full battle speed & active mode on so I don't understand why anyone would want the battle to completely freeze while it's your turn.

Some people prefer turn-based. Xenogears and Chrono Cross are both games that are essentially ATB that auto-pauses.

It is not just a few games this is how wait mode works in pretty much every SE ATB game.

Again, it's like Chess. You might find it easy; I do not. I loved X for the fact I could stop and carefully plot out my next moves. Again.... like Chess.

This is what I liked about World of FF, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Cross and FFXII: the action pauses when you are giving commands. I'd rather have the battles be strategic, rather than being penalized for not smashing the confirm button as fast as possible. I also greatly enjoyed FFT's battle system for the same reason.

Chess requires one to plan many moves ahead; FFIX doesn't.

Actually, you're sorely incorrect if you think a Final Fantasy game doesn't require planning your moves ahead of time.

IE: Timed battles (5... 4... 3... 2... 1... [X-party wipe move here])
IE: Boss Killing.

Trash mobs don't count.... unless it's Marlboro. Add an example there too. Fun times.

A few cherrypicked counter-examples don't exactly prove your idea that the game's battle system is "like chess"; you're giving it way too much credit. The PSX era FF titles were stagnating in terms of combat mechanics; all you really have to do is spam the most powerful attack(s) for the occasion and have one person heal. So long as your party is at least reasonably leveled, you can easily breeze through the games. It wasn't really until XIII that lame turtling "strategies" became ineffective and the battle system finally started to require some skill (because the "stagger" mechanic finally introduced some real tradeoffs).

Hahaha.... define your version of "cherrypicking". That's literally every other freaking battle in a Final Fantasy game. Try again.

Also, the fact you use XIII as an example of a "good" FF title is hilarious. "Lightning Dies, so game over"? What is this, Shining Force but with only 3 playable characters? Get that sh*te outta here.

We're talking about REAL Final Fantasies here... like IX, that requires forethought; unless you like starting over, and over, and over again. Like Chess... any battle (espesically bosses) require knowing the mechanics (IOWs: The opponent), knowing their moves (IOWs: The opponent), knowing how to beat them... and how to plan ahead to ensure victory.

Anyway, I have no intentions of debating further... nor did I intend for some pseudo-argument to get started in the first place, so here is where I bow out of this thread. Good luck friend... and may Kefka have mercy on your soul.

You could install the MEMORIA mod and make the game turn-based without time.

It's "ridiculously easy" to you. You aren't the center of the universe. Some people are handicapped and only play turn based games (I have a paralyzed friend for instance). Even handicaps aside, some people don't want to feel rushed when playing TURN BASED combat.

Anyways, I have this on Switch not Steam, but the ATB is broken on there too.

Dear lord, way to necro a thread

Which is fine. It takes us back to the good times when this thread was active.

You can beat this entire game with a LVL 1 party...and the ATB wait setting does work exactly as intended. In fact it's necessary to abuse it if you're doing an EXIIPG run.
