No, by free roam I mean getting access to certain tools that allow you to travel to any point of the world map. They become available halfway through disc three.
That is totally fine. The disc thing isn't too noticeable on the PC version, but back in the PS1 days the game was distributed over four discs due to its overall file size. Since a single disc couldn't hold all assets at the same time, some locations are only accessible at certain parts (discs) of the game (Evil Forest for example will never be entered again, since its data is no longer available on later discs). These limitations are still present in all later versions (I think such a huge change is way too much work for a simple port). At certain parts in the story the game forces you to save. At these times the disc changes used to happen.
Most of the story is distributed over the first three discs with free roam becoming available in the second half of disc three, the fourth disc only holds the final dungeon, the world map with many places closed off (Dali is available, though) and tons of AMVs.
I wish i was playing this game for the first time again. You are in for a ride buddy!
