No random encounters in Desert Palace
I remember the Desert Palace being the first hard area in the game when I played it on PS1. Now on PC I can't even get a single random encounter. I tried activating/deactivating the no random encounter cheat, reseting the game but still nothing, the palace is empty. Is this normal?

Yes. The only place you encounter enemies is Kuja's room (on your way back from (Oeilvert) and the docks leading to the Hilda Garde (leaving for and returning from Oeilvert). I just finished this area myself and I am now pursuing Kuja to the Shimmering Isle and I believe the only battle was in the last room of the palace.

There's something weird going on with the encounter system in this game... I don't get any fights for the first minute or two of any dungeon.

Yeah, this confused the hell out of my when i was doing my first playthrough on PC.I remember this dungeon being one hell of a challenge due to the enemies and the characters i was using, but it was just a cakewalk. I'm guessing it was a creative decision for the port, but it was a strange one.

dont remember about this specific place, but I know for a fact they lowered the enemy encounter rate because, well, it's Square Enix, and JRPGs are too hard for players these days so, hell, let's put a ton of cheats and lower the encounter rate. Thank god they didn't completely destroy the game like they did with FF1-6 with the re-releases (btw that's why I really recommend anyone who wants to try the older games to EMULATE them from NES-SNES or even the FF Origins/Anthology/Chronicles for PSX)

There's definitely supposed to be enemies in that place though

I mean, seriously, though, this is just lies now. There are indeed random encounters in Desert Palace, omg. If you want more, go get Hades workshop, go to the Desert palace fields, open the script, in ht main_init section change the random battle occurrence to higher value like 240, and yo ass will get a bunch of random encounters alright.
I don't know what you're getting at, but during my PC playthrough, i got literally, and i mean LITERALLY, no encounters whilst going through the main Palace with the characters that didn't go on the mission. On the PS1 version, every playthrough, this was one of the more difficult areas because of the enemies that were present.

It's just lowered. Got the same thing with Evil Forest. Got to the boss without a single battle, once. I agree that it's a shame they did that, but if you need to grind or get some Blue Magic for Quina, just turn in circles until you get one.

There's definitly random encounters there, it's not different from any other location.

You can run away from everything, so I don't understand the "more fights = harder" argument.

It wasn't the fact that it was "more fights means it's harder", it's that the characters in the second party were some of my weakest. Plus, the ecounter rate, if it is there, has to now be the lowest in the game. My run through took me about 20 minutes, getting all the bloodstones, i fought literally no enemies, whilst in the PS1 version, because of my party, it was a pretty difficult area.

^^ That's the "random" part. I had 4 battles in Desert Palace, but none in Evil Forest, Burmencia or Mountain Pass.

That would pretty much never happen on PS1.

Which was never the case on the PS1. I had a few in Evil Forest, because it's a small area, but i got steam rolled by the amount of battles in Desert Palace. It's nothing to do with the game having "random battles", i've played this game to death on the PS1, they have lowered the encounter rate for the area.

So is there a way to just increase the encounter rate, to say "normal values?"

Only if you use Hades Workshop to change the scripts for each area.
