Zidane should cast Soul Blade if you were able to Synthesis The Ogre weapon for him. Zidane should also have Bird Killer mastered or on an armor to raise critical chance on Gizamaluke.
Quina should have learned Mighty Guard from the dragons outside of Gizamaluke's Grotto and cast that to defend everyone from melee attacks, if not use Quina as a backup healer.
Viva should cast slow until it works and then FOCUS a lot (maybe 5-6 turns in a row) and cast Thunder and this should bring down the boss very quickly.
Freya should cast Lancer before using JUMP to get out of the way.
Everyone should have Glass Armlet to reduce water damage by half.
To back up a few things Blank said, Zidane should be able to blind the boss using Soul Blade and having The Ogre equipped. If the boss is blind, his swipes will rarely hit. I doubt Quina will have enough MP to cast Mighty Guard though so just have him on potion duty while Freya uses Jump and Vivi uses Thunder. His magic should do pretty good damange if you're using elemental weaknesses like that. Shouldn't ever need to use Lancer or Focus though, so I'll argue that point he made.
So a quick recap:
Abilities gained from equipment matter more than stats
Get The Ogre for Zidane and use Soul Blade to blind the boss, essentially crippling him
Quina should be on healing duty, attacking if everyone is fine
Freya should always Jump, Vivi should be casting Thunder
If you're using a good strat and losing, grind. Such is the life of an RPG, but this game seriously rewards you for it with all the abilities and spells you can learn, plus Quina's eat for Blue Magic and Ability/Level Up giving you bonus AP/XP. Play smart, not hard.
It's also not a bad idea to run around outside of the Grotto, or fight in the Qu marsh, to get blue magic from Quina. Magic Hammer, Frog Drop, and some others are pretty good to get.
Otherwise, getting a few levels isn't bad either. Near the Chocobo Forest and directly next to the area transition that takes you to South Gate is a forest that has a high encounter rate of a dancing plant enemy (mandragora I think?) that gives significant amounts of XP and AP, and you can get free healing from drinking the water at South Gate.
On the boss of Gizmaluke's Grotto, You can use a Tent from your inventory, and throw it at the boss at the start of the fight. It has a 50% chance to inflict both Silence and Darkness on the boss, making him significantly easier to beat - it won't cast Water on you, and the physical attacks are much less likely to hit. Then you can just go to town on the guy and heal as necessary.
So yeah, I actually ended up using that strat literally every time I face this fight, just use it.
My strategy for this part,
zidane and co should be level 9-12
zidane - steal until you get the items you want and then attack
freya - jump - items as a last resort
vivi - thunder - items as a last resort
quina - items/attack when he can
and thats all she wrote for that boss.
(make sure to learn and equip all abilities, my run now is level 26 with alexandria gear, learning those abilities now)
You can't get a Silk Shirt (or Glass Buckle) at that point, there's no equipment shop.
Just have everyone use Potions until you hit Trance, you'll chip him down eventually.
You can steal a Silk Shirt from Stiener and Black Waltz 1, Garnet starts with one and you can buy them from from Dali. If the OP still doesn't have one somehow, he has to wait until "disc 2".
You can also learn Thunder from a Glass Buckle from Lindblum, but I can't remenber if you can backtrack there at that point. EDIT: You can
That's hardly the problem though becasue Vivi doing a bit more damage isn't going to make much difference if your strategy is wrong.
