Tips for newbies?
I've gone through the tutorial games, and I'm almost finished reading the manual. I've also been playing Skirmish games, upping the difficulty when things get too easy. Using the detailed tool tips feature has helped a lot understanding PoA.

I'm wondering if you have any other tips, or things you wish you knew when you started.

Also, any tips on how to use cossack and similar units effectively? The mounted units with a shooting range of two tiles. Thanks

After you have read the manual, read this topic.

Then, use the guides

Then, play some vs computer and at when you start to vaguely understand the game rules you can start the multiplayer sessions. Use pot luck terrain pot luck armies skirmish with medium or large forces with auto force selection. people will pick up your game quite soon.

Choose the era which fits you most. My fav is the Age of Machiavelli. The armies are really diverse in this era.

This is how you can have fun with it.
