I've found tending to it every other day or every third day works out okay mostly. If you are going to be gone for a while then use the vacation mode and it will halt all progress until you return. I've had to do it a few times.

OMG I replied to the wrong board ... BUT I forgot my game for MONTHS .. like 3 ... and they recovered when I watered them.

I had an early garden die off completely, but I don't think that happens any more. Also, vacation mode isn't 100% reliable; I had my garden set on vacation on my old computer, then started using a new computer and when I remembered and returned to my garden it acted as if I'd just left it active.
