Precision shot is for goals. Power shot is meant for deflections/corners.
Any DF in the box will usually intercept the power shot. Same with a sweeper. Defending corners can be tricky. But that's football.
Making either the original change or this one would lower the difficulty of the game a bit, but increase the realism.
The situation is different with far-away shots taken by players that are not even any good at shooting. If a clumsy defender taks a shot from 40 m away, no matter how much power he puts into it, any keeper worth his salt is going to be able to catch it almost effortlessly. At that distance, power is almost not even a factor, since the ball will most likely have slowed down considerably before reaching the goal. Which brings me to my original point: shooting next to the goal, any player, no matter his actual skill at shooting, should be able to draw a deflection just by putting strength into it, but beyond that, it shouldn't be so easy.
We already have situations with conditional outcomes depending on the difference in rolls (such as a wing midfielder running forward along the wing against a defender). In this case, I'd go as far as suggesting we'd need a similar system based on the potential for the roll rather than the actual roll. For example, wing midfielder with 11 accuracy shooting from four squares away against a keeper with 100 defense. A lucky enough roll could even have him score, but you roll 8, the keeper rolls 80, and you expect a corner? I don't think so. You wanna take a Hail Mary shot and see if you get lucky? By all means, but your odds of drawing some benefit from it should be realistic.
Also, in real life, there are often situations when the footballer just shoots even knowing he has few chances to score. Because there are often chances of ricochets or other unexpected outcomes. The more you shoot, the better.
So yeah, in the extremes (10 vs 100), the Power Shot mechanic looks weird but in most cases, I believe, it's good. First, it rebounds to a random tile so it's not always a corner. Second, it's hard to put a footballer 1 on 1 with GK. Third, even in extreme cases, it has changes to score.
To defend a corner when the team has a CF with heading:
-have a GK with playing out and decent control
-have a CF with level 3 heading and put him on the same row as the CF
-use your best control player to challenge the CF and pull him into one of the side positions along the endline not in front of the goal. This way if your player wins the challenge the CF will be nullified. (as opposed to pulling the CF one spot directly away from goal where he will still attempt to head the ball) Obviously, this can't be done with the center spot inside the 6yd box.
I use a LD or RD to prevent getting to break-in spot.
