The main thing here is the match tactics. If you understand that, everything else will follow. I started the game on vanilla a lot of times. In the first season, when you understand the match tactics, you can sell half of the team for the good price, and buy some 26 yo players (+2 zero class from YA). FTG is a management game. It's normal to take 26yo, play with him for some time, then sell him and buy another 26 yo. The higher the league you are playing in, the better players there are on the transfer.
Btw, do you know how to make crosses? Do you often use them? How many goals you score with crosses every match? Do you know how to use wing forwards? How many goals you score with wing forwards?
In that time period you are describing you will also have gotten 14 youth players (ofc I would recommend not keeping players until they are 33). You can develop the young players, and to a lesser extent those you buy, and sell them for more than you paid for them. With that Glory and Money you can upgrade the club, including the possibility of upgrading the Scouting Centre to get more choice of players/younger players, or upgrading the Academy to get better youth players, or upgrading your coaches to develop players, etc.
some of these investments are better than others, but all of this is very much possible. The point KoS makes about tactics is also important. The better you are with those, the more you will understand what type of players you want, how to utilize what you have better, how you will be impacted by the loss of certain players which can inform who you sell and who you keep, etc.
In the base game, you can't earn Glory by selling footballers. That's the main grip if I understand correctly. Therefore, my suggestion are about ways to develop without Glory at all. Your point about 14 young footballers is correct, though.
