Every option should be viable. I understand that not many players play with option 2 but it really makes sense.
I think this decision shows the depth of the game to your credit.
The trouble with the academy is that it is:
1) expensive
2) multiple layers of RNG.
a) What level is the player?
b) What position?
c) What skills? If any?
Maybe having a list of three academy players from which you can choose 1. Or have a list of 10 new candidates. You choose the position and skill, but only 1 of those players will develop and be available at the next window. Some compromise where the player can make some input, but isn't guaranteed to get the exact player they want.
