You can then select one of the trees to start in, there is always one skill meant to replace your basic attack for each tree. That's a good place to start.
If you get to 10 points in the tree and are already bored with it, you can easily re-spec in town for free and try another tree. At first there won't be much difference between them besides maybe the type of element your damage is based on but eventually you will get to the meatier skills.
Eventually you will find a skill that really appeals to you. You can then look up an end game build based on that skill and get an idea of what your gear and skills should focus on. Most builds will have tons of runes and gems on them which you don't really have access to until end game so I would not suggest following them entirely.
That being said a build guide is not really necessary. I've tried several skills out and they were all perfectly viable doing lower tier dungeon runs in end game. That's all you really need to start building up your resources and gear which will allow you to really perfect your chosen build.
After trying a few characters I settled on Templar with Ember (fire aoe). Later I picked up slice to dash around and taunt to group up enemies (both in the first tree - physical). I got my first 500 killstreak with this build in Heroic sub-30). It involves dashing between packs, pulling them in and 1shotting them with ember.
Later (post 30) I switched it up to Holy (once I had enough points to get the 2 skills that drop swords from the sky in addition to slice for mobility as well as the endgame halo mode), not sure if I should get taunt again..
Templar is good for beginners as it's very tanky, but still has good mobility from Slice. And I enjoy the feeling of grouping up a lot of enemies and aoeing them down in a couple hits.
