Straight swords are in top 3 best pvp weapon classes, so not even a contest.

The spear is pretty cute though. Very long, got insane poise during weapon art, when two handed can attack almost as fast as small spears and people seem to be not very familiar with R2 timings and often get hit by R1>R1>R2 combo. I love it.

Also looks very cool. Great for fashion.

Greatswords are in there for sure.
Good ol' Claymore is a disgustingly versatile weapon and its' 2 brothers - Hollowslayer and Onyx - are not much different. You can literally adapt them to any situation.

As for a 3rd place...
I would give it to down-swing halberds (Glaive, Gundyr's, Splitleaf...).
Long range, fast R1, and the stupid R1>WA>R1 combo to casually take away half of opponent's health because he couldn't react to your R1 attack.

Technically all the light weapons are very strong too - all the one-handed sabres, katanas, hammers and axes... But they're basically all just quirky Straight Swords.
Nothing among them comes to versatility of the most basic of b*tches - the Lothric Straight Sword.

As for fleeing players... Decent, yeah. Its quick and spammable which is what you need for runners.
Although i think the Katanas are specifically the kings in that because of their universal running R1 thrust that they have. Especially the Washing Pole.

The best weapon classes in the game are Curved swords (with the fast moveset like scimitar) and Daggers > Thrusting swords and Straight swords, those are the actual meta weapon classes
