if you want to backstep while the character is looking at the camera then you have to turn your character around first and then press Space
It's useful for certain pvp tricks if you can do it reliably otherwise it's just your general parlor trick pvp'ers likely learn while waiting for their red orbs to find a damn invasion, lol!
The timing is a little tricky at first but its really simple.
Works the exact same way in Dark Souls 1 and Elden Ring.
