Cannot use coiled sword fragment at start of the game

From looking at playthrough online it seems like you're supposed to get a prompt in firelink shrine to use the coiled sword fragment. This simply happen to me. I can confirm that is in my inventory. Am i doing something wrong?

Find the right angle at the bonfire in the middle

you get the fragment later the sword is for the bonefire in the middle of firelink shrine

Apparently i was pointing it at the wrong angle.
