What is the point of Hallowing?

IDK why it is in the game, what it does, or how it effects anything at all? Is it good, or bad? Do I need or not need it for things? All I know is it goes up when you die, and I can potentially get rid of it but I don't see any point to since I'm just going to die more.
I don't care about spoilers, I've beaten this 2x already.

More hollowing is more item drop rarity. If you are going to focus on doing arcivements, staying hollowng is very useful.

99 Hollowing gives you +5 Luck if you're wielding a Hollow-infused weapon. You also need a certain amount of Hollowing to receive Yoel's free level-ups.

It's mostly for Yoel/Yuria's quest line which unlocks a cool ending + various useful gear like the Dark Hand.

Gameplay mechanics wise, the only difference is you get +5 Luck when wielding a fully upgraded Hollow infused weapon/shield if your Hollowing is 15+. Equip two, and it's +10 Luck, very useful as the Hollow infusion adds Luck scaling. Still rather niche however.

This isnt DS2. You instantly go from smoothskin to ghoul if your hollowing reaches 15 while not wearing a sacrifice ring.
