So why is this game is so popular?
What separates it from other games of the same genre? I'm actually looking forward to give it a try and i want to know why people love it (outside of difficulty).

because of the sensations you get when you win, it's just amasin. It's not easy to say how you feel when you finally beat a really hard boss or when you beat a big area or even in pvp just give it a try ^^ in the begining i didn't really liked it because i was really bad but now... i love it so much <3

Really good and responsive gameplay, it's hard to play (if it's the first time you play a "Soul" game), but you will learn dying and you will get good.

It's not very popular it's more of a cult game. DS3 will have watered down gameplay because they hope to bring more fans to the series. Basically they are doing this because all they care about is making as much money as possible.

Same genre? Honestly i haven't seen any other game in this genre that is both punishing yet fair.

This guy explains it better than any of us could in text.

Quite the opposite actually. Its faster than Dark Souls 1 and a little bit slower than Bloodborne. Also Bloodborne was watered down due to accessibility. Dark Souls 3 so far shows no signs of getting dumbed down.

If you want to become a DS pro there are few rules you must apply :

First thing first, log into Steam forums and immediatly tell everyone how you loved DS1 and how much you hated DS2 in a thread. If there is someone around praising DS2, call him a casul f**agit without reasoning. If he insists giving further intellectual rebuttals just tell him to Git Gud. He can play LoL for all we care.

After finishing this ritual, congratz! You are now a professional DS player. No need to play DS, DS2 or Bloodborne. Just go for DS3 and torch some bonfires.

What genre? 3D metrodivania with Monster Hunter inspired combat? Or RPG in general? What other games? I'd interested to play other games in Dark Souls genre (waiting for that Salt & Sanctuary PC port).

It's not just difficulty. There's alot of hard games on steam. If all that you want is difficulty i'd rather point you in the way of games like Wings of Vi (not implaing it's a bad game, quite enjoy it myself). Souls is more about combination of interesting leveldesign + cool atmosphere + good battle mechanics + epic bossfights.

You have to play it in the first place to understand why it is so unique. Watching youtubers and reading posts will not make much difference i guess.

You have to experience going from the beautifullness of Undead Burg and the Parish, to the hopeless, hellish nightmare of Blighttown. From an impossible and fantastic dark forest, to the royalness of a giant castle guarded by a dragonslayer and an executioner. And then when you realise everyone around you is arguably dead and succumbing into madness, and you listen to the music Gwyn Lord of Cinder...then you'll get the picture.

Or you simply get angry, rage quit and never touch the series again

But Dark Soul 2 isn't that bad... The pvp is much better than the first one.

Trial and error type of game, needs a lot of patience and thinking. Rewarding when you achieve a goal like killing a boss or miniboss.

The graphic sector is not really great but it's decent.

Really cool weapons, armor sets, spells, rings. Has solid mechanics, a nice atmosphere and well made leveldesign.

The Story, or Lore in this case, is not told directly to the player, but can be found in the item descriptions or in the world. Whether or not this aspect of the game is good is arguable.

Some people play it because they think it's a hard game (especially those players new to the series) but it actually is not. Everyone can tell you that after some time ingame it gets easier because you learn from your mistakes (or someone else's if you touch those bloodstains on the floor) and gain experience.
