Is there any penalty to dying?
My character still appears human and my life bar isn't shrinking like DS2. Anybody know?

There is only a penalty if you die in ember form.

There is a consequence to dying if you do a certain thing in the game (it'll make you start hollowing). But other than that you just have a shrinked healthbar compared to being ember empowered.

If you accepted yoel's favor then you will probably become more hollow each time you die

If you're hardly ever in ember form then there's no penalty from death in this game.

If you die in ember form you lose the HP buff it gives you.

And as long as you don't go accepting any sweeties from strange pilgrims then you won't even go hollow either when you die.

if you die once all the soul you collected will drop on the spot u died.... if you die again before retrieving your lost souls then you loose them for good.

Exactly lol, but I take it for granted because it's such a staple mechanic that I always forget that newbies might not "inherently" know it lol.

If you do accept Yoel's dark sign and do the hollow thing - each time you die, does your available health decrease as it did in DS2? Or is is only the Hollow/Zombie face look the consequence?

Ok, at least it doesn't drop your HP everytime you die. I hated that.
