It's all about Embers now (effectively same thing). You don't "lose" HP, but when "Embered" you have higher max HP. So it's not DSII HP mechanic.

It's different, and less punishing in my opinion.
I won't spoil, but basically instead of having maluses when you die, you have bonues when you don't die.

Humanity is replaced by Embers, being in Ember form (old human) gives you 40% bonus to your hp

You do not lose HP like in DS2, the equivalent to effigies are embers. Embers buff your HP untill you die and from what i can gather alow you to see other players summoning sign.

Whats strange with all you said, is that i buy the game on old physical style. And the book stated clearly page 14 that death give hp max penality,so... dunno

Embers are a sort of combination of humanity from ds1 and effigies. When kindled (used ember), you have increased hp and can summon just like being human in the other games.
it's more akin to Demon's Souls regarding death. If you are not embered, you have less heath, can't summon people, can't be invaded... that stuff, but if you are embered, you get more life and the online stuff.

You don't lose half of your heath like in Demon's Souls though, but still loses quite a bit. Even if you don't to summon people, being embered might help just for the extra health.

Guys im like you, i didnt pâid attention that much to my hp max looks the same maybe a bit lesser than in the beginning, but in the official book who come with the physical version, its stated black on white " at each deaths you loose some hp on your max hp state". Thats the questionmark
