Not able to switch weapons

I seriously don't understand this game... the keyboard mapping is programmed ridiculously... I am playing with mouse and keyboard, but the game is showing the Gaming Controller Buttons to press... good job... not!
But well... lets get to the point: How the hell do I equip a new weapon? I am playing sorcerer and bought a scimitar. It did not show a red X in the merchant menu and I could not see any stats that prevent me from using it, but when I go to my inventory I cannot press "use" because it is "greyed out". Anybody who can tell me what I am doing wrong?

you have to go to the equip menu not the inventory menu.
