Is Dark Souls 3 an open world game?
There have been questions on the other dark souls games, but i haven't played any to know what the people actually mean about the dark souls games being somewhat level-based? So any clue as to the third installment will be open world? If not, then what is it like in terms of exploration? Thanks.

It is level based in the sense that you can't progress to a different area without beating a boss. The game has a big world but you will have to work for it to get places.

They are largely open.
A lot of areas are locked behind boss defeats, or items that are found or purchased.

As you get deeper into the world, enemies and bosses are more powerful. (higher hp, damage, resistances)
Weapons, gear, items and leveling stats make exploring these easier.

Dark souls 1 and 2 can be completed at 'level 1' ..but this is really not easy. At all.

I'm sure others will explain further, or in more detail.
But yes, for the most part - they are open world.

Well kind of and kind of not. Its not the WItcher 3 where you are free to run where you want. But the game still has planned routes and corridors. You are still for the most part going where the game wants you to go. It is mostly linear. Don't let Dark Souls players fool you into thinking its and open world game. Because it really is not. It just has many linear paths all hooked together.

If 2D is to Level-Based as 3D is to Open world, then the Dark Souls series is 2.5D

Can only agree to this. Dark Souls is not Open World really but a linear game. Think of it as an old school RPG. First Area > Defeat Boss > New Area Opens. The Tutorial Fight of 1 and 3 is about the same thing regarding that fact. You can still go back and visit old places but thats about it.

Even Pokemon is more Open World than Dark Souls xD

Wrong.
There is no 2D = this or 3D = this.
There can be both, for both.
Ah okay, thanks guys. So previous areas, once you have progressed through them and onto the next, are free to come back to and explore again?
It's only open-world once you unlock all the areas. You still have to fight to progress in this game like any good old dungeon crawler.
It's a game about clicking on bloodstains and suppressing laughter.

Yep. In that case its like every good RPG. It also wouldnt work any other way. Some areas are only being able to be accessed through previously entered areas.

Like DS1: Firelink Shrine
It was the base for every NPC and the baselocation from where you go to multiple places.
You could enter:
Undead Burg
Undead Church
Catacombs
Ruins of New Londo or Valley of the Drakes

(Not to mention the areas you enter through some of those areas)
