The purple phantoms are from the Mound Makers covenant and are referred to as some kind of crazy dark spirits.

Apparently if you summon purples with a white soapstone, they can attack anything. You, your phantoms, invaders and npc enemies. Can't help with the boss though.

yea they are also purple and are similar to the watchdogs in terms on mechanics

They are essentially useless as they are right now. Nobody summons them unless they want to PvP. You aren't going to trick anyone because your summon sign is purple. Wearing the ring of the White SHOULD make your sign show up as white but it doesn't so the covenant is useless.

You can invade as a purple phantom with the red eye orb but so can literally every other covenant, invaders can already kill each other so being purple does nothing

the wiki doesnt say anything about it , only your sign will appear golden on the ground

Didn't read it on the wiki, somebody claimed it on reddit. I think somebody also said the letters are just slightly red, so they aren't identical. I really hope it's true.

nah you cant do that , your sign will appear purple
