Just don't do it when he's in weapon-art stance, because he'll parry your ass.
What isn't casual is doing it your first time, first try at Firelink before even talking to the Keeper, and with the majority of un-upgraded starting weapons it takes like three or even four riposte criticals to kill him. In the process you're likely to get partial parries and take damage, unless your chosen class starts with one of the small-shields (and even then).
There's being 'casul' (btw I just love how people deliberately misspell the world now #fadstupidity), and then there's being practical.
