Is it worth infusing fire?
For my first player, i chose the fire gem as my gift, because unlike the other 1 time consumable items, it seems more useful. What i noticed when i tried to infuse however was that it removed the scaling from a weapon. for example, my axe had a D in both Str and Dex, yet when i added the flame to it, it changed both scales to - meaning they dont scale with my stats. So my question is, Is it worth picking the Fire gem? Because the extra 100 or so damage from fire seems like it would eventually be obsolete compared to just leveling the weapon normally with titanite and scaling it with your stats as you lvl. What good is infusing a weapon if it removes the scaling and seems to make it weak for the end game.

From what I can tell it's what you can do to give you a boost early to mid game while building your end game weapon.
Fire is op for early game.

if you're leveling a stat like STR or DEX, it's not worth it. When it does seem to be worth it is when you're running a build to just get the required stats to wield the weapon like with a mage for instance. Then it would be beneficial to infuse the weapon.

It's probably a better early-game thing. Fact is, this time around NONE of the gifts offer any real sort of long-term help. Either you'll get something as good or better quickly, or the gift is consumable.

I infused fire into my mace and it barely increased the damage at all (maybe it was dumb to put it on a mace, maybe I should have put it on a weapon I was planning to use for at least the medium-term). Which I guess was helpful because I moved onto another weapon and so the lack of scaling didn't hurt.

It's very good at the beginnng because at first you do not have enough stats to get decent scaling anyway. You can infuse with fire at the beginning and than for the first levels only put points into more HP and stamina which will make things early on quiet a bit easier.

Also infusions are not permanent. You can simply un-infuse later or switch to another infusion.

for a long while its worth it, u can stiil enhance the weapon via titanit, later u can than change the infusion while the titanite upgrades remain on ur weapon. u see when it will be worth it to change to a scaling infusion just by scoling over the infusion options in the smiths menu

Given that the best early weapon available to non-Knight-firegem gimps is a Dark enfused Battle Axe, then of course it does.

Longsword > infuse fire gem > face roll the entire first three acts

Hint:

You lose ~20 odd damage physical

You gain 100+ fire damage

Kinda balances out.

i used it on my first character, very helpful for the longsword. try it and a +3 fire weapon can carry you till about 30% of the game east. by then you'll have a good idea what weapon to use next. BTW you can always respec your character and use a weapon that scales later in the game

Its powerful as hell early game, especially if you aren't using Dex or Str scaling weapons on a Dex/Str/Quality build.

And more important then that: Lots of enemies early game are EXTREMELY WEAK to fire. And I don't mean damage-wise.

Dogs will instantly flip over to fire damage.

Many hollow enemies will sometimes reel in pain at even a single point of fire damage.

All maggot or risen-undead enemies in the Cathedral of the Deep will straight up stunlock to fire weapons. Extremely useful on the maggot enemies down below, and remains useful until you set foot into the cathedral. (Still does fair damage there.)

Dogs actually flip over to pretty much any damage from my experience. Tried it with a club, straight sword, axe, etc.

A fire longsword DPS is pretty fantastic, Great PVP and light weight so you can carry another preferred weapon you want
