Dark Souls 3 - Controller necessary?
Is it necessary to have a controller for Dark Souls 3 like in the last two games? Or has that aspect been improved in that it's possible to play with a keyboard?

Thanks!

No, you don't need a controller at all. But as a small tip - if you are going to use keyboard&mouse; do remember to change the controls to suit your own playstyle. :)

A lot of people seem to play KB + M out of CHOICE now, so it must be playable without. It's still far easier with a controller, though. Key mapping is confusing and takes a little while to get used to, and the tutorials only tell you the Xbox buttons. But now people on Reddit are fighting over what input is better. Back in DS1 you only played KB + M if you were TRULY sadistic.

keyboard and mouse works perfect for me. Most of the people think controller is better, just because previous two games doesn't fully support keyboard and mouse well.

Having always used K+M, controller makes movement/rolling sinificantly better and smoother. You can tell just by watching people play with controllers. However some controller seem to have trouble kicking while its pretty easy to do on k+m.

Thanks guys, I don't own a controller personally but didn't want to buy the game if it was necessary to have one.

Appreciated! I can buy the game when it's on sale next feeling safe <3

Not jecessary, but you'll likely find it easier with a controller.

Mouse and keyboard is playable. And if that's your preference, then terrific! But the fact remains that Souls games were designed to be played with a controller, and to me and most other players, the controller feels smoother and much more natural. I could never play these games without a controller personally. Just try both and see which you prefer. Navigating through menus seems to be pretty clunky with a controller though.

Funnily enough, I tried a controller and hated it... but I've never played with PS4/Xbox controllers... so to me, everything is easier with the Mouse and Keyboard. I can do anything just fine with it. Only thing I changed was Left mouse click for left attacking/blocking/whatever, and right to right. Glad they removed the double click nonsense from Dark Souls 2 though.

Who doesnt play on controller in games like that? Its just easier and more comfortable.
If you still dont own one - wtf.

I prefer playing all games like this with a controller, it just feels better. Precise movement control > precise camera control IMO. Actually there's not that many games I use a controller for, I could count them on one hand - maybe even counting each Souls game individually haha.

Well, I've never actually played Dark Souls before, and I'd been told before that you definitely needed one for those two games before this one.

Played hundreds of hours in DS1 (DSMFix needed there, though, the original controls were made in hell) and DS2 with M+KB as I'm pretty bad with a controller (never could use one, it is incredibly clumsy to me), now playing DS3 without any problems as well. From Software is certainly not making it any easier with those on-screen prompts hardcoded for Xbox One controller, but you get used to it soon enough.

Don't let anyone tell you you absolutely need controller for Dark Souls as people often tend to say. If you're good with the idead of playing third person action games using M+KB, you'll do perfectly fine in Dark Souls as well. There's nothing you can do on a controller that you wouldn't be able to do with M+KB.

Well, if I need one then I will get one; but I'd prefer to find out for myself in game before making a rash decision that will cost me money. Money doesn't grow on trees and I'm currently not earning, so saving is a priority for me.
