As for the Irithyll Straight Sword, I use this weapon a lot and agree that it is pretty strong, but also easy to read. Practice your parry timing and you'll eventually be able to punish those senseless R1 spammers that use this weapon.
Long-range weapons like spears are also effective against the average straight sword user, since they will usually swing twice or more before stopping (button mashing can cause a second swing to be queued up before the first swing ends). Against some Irithyll Straight Sword users, I roll backwards as they swing, then use a spear's rolling attack to hit them. It often reaches, since they're still swinging and moving forward like idiots.
Well timed Stomp + Wep.Art of EXecutioner's Blade can turns the tide of fight in your favour.
PVP is all over the place right now, and straight swords are just OP. My advice is for you to wait them to come to you and then execute perfect timing to teach those spammers.
Parry also comes in handy, if they spam they are predictable.
I'm not the greatest at PVP, but I've won approximately 70% of my battles when invaded. One or two of them have been 2v1 against me. I'm expecting people to figure out how to counter the straight sword line sooner than later, so I feel it's valuable information to share (the above mentioned info). I wish you luck in your next PVP experiences!
lol. You just need to learn to adapt to the different weapons. Getting killed by them is actually more useful than wielding them. You get a good sense of just how great their strengths are, but also you learn to see through their weaknesses. Straight Swords are well balanced and good in virtually all situations, but they're not broken by any means.
So basically the only defense against them is every available defensive move in the game pretty much. The ISS is also easy to parry and its reach isn't very long. If the issue is with r1 spam then they are also spamming themselves right out of stamina. Well, unless they're hacking infinite stamina...
There's a problem with that logic. Straight Sword R1 swings don't consume a large amount of stamina. With 120 stam (24 END), you can swing up to... I think it was 10-12 times? And still have enough stamina for a roll at the end to GTFO. It's extremely efficient. And the ISS has the longest reach of all the Straight Swords...
It's laughable.... almost as easy as parrying Gwynn...
