Having trouble countering straight swords in PvP.
Specifically, the Irithyll Straight Sword I find gives me a lot of trouble. Not even the frostbite- I just notice it seems to be the one people use most frequently, and I have a great deal of trouble countering it. Does anyone have any tips as to how to improve my odds against them? I feel kind of bad when I get overturned by a bunch of basic r1 spam with straight swords, but they break my poise, they're fast, and they do enough stamina damage when blocking that I can't turtle much either.

Git gud impending, I'm aware, I just wanted to see other people's opinions on it and ways to counter it.

I also have trouble with people spamming the farron greatsword skill. Any ideas there, as well? I'd appreciate them

Farron Greatsword is easy to read and roll through. Depending on your weapon, you can rollpoke them out of the combo after they do the first slide. Don't try parrying it, as there is a blind spot they can hit that will hit you even if your timing is right.

As for the Irithyll Straight Sword, I use this weapon a lot and agree that it is pretty strong, but also easy to read. Practice your parry timing and you'll eventually be able to punish those senseless R1 spammers that use this weapon.

Long-range weapons like spears are also effective against the average straight sword user, since they will usually swing twice or more before stopping (button mashing can cause a second swing to be queued up before the first swing ends). Against some Irithyll Straight Sword users, I roll backwards as they swing, then use a spear's rolling attack to hit them. It often reaches, since they're still swinging and moving forward like idiots.

The only solution would be a patch, where they balance damage of weapons (greatswords are weaker than longsword lol) and fix the poise. Even jump attack wont work as they can stagger you mid-air (wut? Lol)

Well timed Stomp + Wep.Art of EXecutioner's Blade can turns the tide of fight in your favour.
PVP is all over the place right now, and straight swords are just OP. My advice is for you to wait them to come to you and then execute perfect timing to teach those spammers.

Parry also comes in handy, if they spam they are predictable.

Ah, so no more two-handing demon fists. Shame.

Estoc beats both.

Estoc, huh. Guess that'll at least be a good holdout for straight swords.

I have been shamefully parried twice in a row using the ISS, and people have killed me with slow heavy weapons. Sorry, but git gud is the only actual thing to say.

As a straight sword user (and fanatic), I can tell you that the Straight Sword line has one distinct weakness. Reach. If you out-reach the opponent, you can fight back. Well, that holds true for all but the ISS, which has the longest reach of all the Straight Swords, and comes with the insanely useful Weapon Art: Stance. However, if you've mastered Halberds or spears with swipe attacks, or even Reapers, then you stand a chance. Alternatively, fighting head on with Dual Swords is not a bad option as well. I've been caught off guard a few times. Adapting is key.

I'm not the greatest at PVP, but I've won approximately 70% of my battles when invaded. One or two of them have been 2v1 against me. I'm expecting people to figure out how to counter the straight sword line sooner than later, so I feel it's valuable information to share (the above mentioned info). I wish you luck in your next PVP experiences!

lol. You just need to learn to adapt to the different weapons. Getting killed by them is actually more useful than wielding them. You get a good sense of just how great their strengths are, but also you learn to see through their weaknesses. Straight Swords are well balanced and good in virtually all situations, but they're not broken by any means.

No, it's only good if they're chasing you.....like all the fricking straight and thrusting swords are. Your only options are shields, parry, feinting, and nothing else.

So basically the only defense against them is every available defensive move in the game pretty much. The ISS is also easy to parry and its reach isn't very long. If the issue is with r1 spam then they are also spamming themselves right out of stamina. Well, unless they're hacking infinite stamina...

There's a problem with that logic. Straight Sword R1 swings don't consume a large amount of stamina. With 120 stam (24 END), you can swing up to... I think it was 10-12 times? And still have enough stamina for a roll at the end to GTFO. It's extremely efficient. And the ISS has the longest reach of all the Straight Swords...

It's laughable.... almost as easy as parrying Gwynn...
