The mace... can it compare to swords?
I rerolled a cleric recently and I want to keep him like the cookie cutter traditional cleric... heavy armor/ mace and board.

But using the mace just seems like a handicap to me. I understand it works well on skellies...
My main issue is that it is slow and short range when compared to something like a broadsword. Are there any benefits I am unaware of when it comes to like a mace vs a faster/rangier sword? Does it knockback/stun more often??? It also says it can strike through shields or something like that, but I have yet to see that happen...

I'm gonna keep using it as long as I can but I'm getting the feeling I'm going to need to switch to easier weapons once I get to the harder zones.

Learning the intricacies of your chosen weapon is half the fun in this game.

The mace, along with other blunt weapons, has a better guard break in general.
If you decide to stick with it, you might want to upgrade it along the way. ;)

Have Fun!

Well I reckon the damage is somewhat same, no matter what the enemy. Mace was just broken in Dark Souls 2 because most enemies resisted swords. Mace did SO much more damage to most enemies and it was just... Stupid.

I haven't played with a mace that much, but it seems it's much more balanced now.

How effective you will be with the mace, depends on how you spec your character or infuse the weapon. At base level I beleive the mace is a C in strength, so if you dump a bunch of points into strength it will be more effective than many swords. As long as you keep upgrading it and are allocating your stats effectively, you'll be fine.

Thanks for the tips guys... I'm gonna stick with it but also use a broadsword as secondary when I need it :)

Stick it out, and wait until you solo 3 phantoms with your favorite weapon. I did it with an estoc rapier combo. OMG its so lovely.

it staggers a bit more and can quickly break shields for the enemies if u strike while they are blocking with some attacks.

overall i find maces to be quite bad in this game. strike damage dosnt seem to do anymore damage then standard. maces are also a lot slower. even a broadsword has more attack for pure strength build.

broadsword is pretty godlike early game tho. it will outdamage almost anything for strength builds.

I've been playing with that starter mace for the whole time so far. It's got nice sweep, especially on the second hit, for clearing out swarming mobs. It's not the fastest but with upgrades it does reasonable damage and works well one or two handed if you use a bunch of mircale like I do. The poise break seems to be reasonable without being excessive. One or two hits breaks the guard of mobs. The range is very average. Mine is refined with +4 and the scaling just bumped to B for both dex and str.
