DARK SOULS™ III

Cathedral of the Deep
Edit: I hadn't seen the inside when i made this forum. The inside of the building is awesome it's only the outside I hated.

So I'm massively enjoying this game so far, it's becoming my favorite of the series the more I get into it BUT I just hit this place called the Cathedral of the Deep and lemmie tell you, it feels like a Dark Souls 2 level. Yes that is an insult.

So it's like after DS2 the level designers were told there were too many dumb direct fights and not enough clever terrain based hazards and ambushes and they said "ambushes? We can totaly do ambushes!"

The Miyazaki approved flow is usually something like:
Introduction of area enemies in ideal situation
Multiple enemies in ideal terrain
Enviromental hazards eg explosive barrels, rolling ball, precarious ledges or deep water
Multiple enemies in awkward positions eg sniper points, tight corrider, confinded quarters ect
Lone tough enemy
Tough enemy with support
And for a finale perhaps multiple tough enemies just before a boss room

Then Catherdral of the Deep is like
Tough enemy
Multiple enemies in awkward positions eg sniper points, tight corrider, confinded quarters ect
Ambush with horde of fast enemies x3
Mutliple enemies in tough positions and an ambushing horde x3
Tough enemy and ambushing horde of fast enemies and I guess some archers too f**k it
Mutiple ambushing tough enemies awkward position plus extra extreme soufle sunday whipped cream horde enemy ninja archers greatswords somethingsomething explosion.

This is the first time (I mean ever) that I've ran through an area of a Souls game first time through. You cant say I didn't try playing fair, I'd wipe out 8 ambushes before getting caught out, I shoulsn't have to face 8 f**king ambushes in a row before I even hit s a shortcut or bonfire you psychopaths! The whole POINT of an ambush is A: It should be a rare suprise and B: Knowing the ambush is going to happen should make the job easier. This isn't true when every enemy takes more f**king hits than I do.

In short this feels like a classic Dark Souls 2 case of "Lets make it really really hard for no reason because lol Dark Souls" rather than "How can we make this encounter interesting?". There's nothing interesting about getting swarmed by stupid greatsword wielding midgets over and over again. Luckily so far this is literally the only place I take issue with.

In before Get Gud.

On a side note, how can I get to this Cathedral? I can't seem to find the entrance. It's in the Crucifixion Woods area, correct?

No.

I don't think DS2 enemy placement was bad. Talking about SotFS.

And I don't think Catedral of the Deep is bad either. I never died except for the giant and gravity. And the guys on the roofs (the highest part), but as that is completely optional we shouldn't count them.

After you kill the Crystal Sage the path is behind their boss area

It was mostly getting into the building that I had trouble with, a mixture between midget juster ninjas, those horrible twinblade guys and the unending, excessive ambuses. In the end I gave up even looking for ambushes, so many ambuses had occured I was just consiously wandering into them because I'd given up.

But just now I visited the Catacombs which were way easier for some reason, it was kinda jarring switching from one to the other.

Gasp, something different and unexpected, in dark souls? Oh no, how will I ever deal with it? Time to run blindly into every challenge, die and then cry about the difficulty and level design online.

If you're complaining about Cathedral of the Deep, hoo boy, are you in for some fun in the upcoming areas.

I really enjoyed Cathedral of the Deep - it looked great, had lots of little hidden areas to poke around in and the enemies were fun without being too annoying. It's a shame the Deacons are such a pushover, I solo'd them first try :-/

No.

Yes it is. Or rather, the path to get there is.

The twin blades are a bit hard to deal with but i think you just need to understand how to deal with the slaves. Shields and well timed attacks ftw.

Only problem with Cathedral were the arbitrary way in which you got infected by the bleeding worms. Great area apart from that flaw which ruins a fair bit of it.
