They seem to pop up every time you stop at the bonfire in Firelink. They disappear after 30 seconds or so.

It's supposedly loading the surrounding. I think it's faster to walk from the bonfire before the shrine than waiting for it to go away, unless you need the upper exit.

But then, what was the point of a loading screen if it keeps me locked in a tiny area while it continues loading anyway ? Would it not make more sense to just load the entire level during the loading screen ?

Yes it would make more sense to do that, it's probably for consoles. Instead of a 3 minute loading screen, it'll only be 1 minute, so you can go level up and upgrade gear quickly.

Whereas on PC, it's a 5 second loading screen, and then wait 45 unnecessary seconds for it to load the rest, but every other area fully loads in the first 5.

Yeah thats why i was wondering... It takes just a few seconds to load even the biggest levels, but here it takes almost a minute ?? It's madness. Damn consoles ruining pc gaming.
